Better way to change rear fuel filter on 2016 Cummins?

Does anyone know a better way to change the rear fuel filter (water separator) on a new generation Cummins without getting showered with diesel fuel?

I've done it twice now and always get a lot of fuel pouring out when I loosen the filter. I open the drain prior as required, but it seems a lot of fuel remains somewhere.

BTW, don't have a lift, can only do it on my back on the ground.
  • I piece of clean plastic hose that fits rear filter bib, slides inside the hose front hose. Have a jar or bucket to catch the diesel. Put it with a light used engine oil for magic fire starter. Chris

You can buy a longer hose for the front drain and tuck it out of the way.

Front one's easy. The garbage bag might help

It has a spring loaded check valve. Unscrew it a couple turns before opening the drain.

By "unscrew it", you mean the filter or the plastic sensor at the bottom?
