Nah, I've probably driven 10,000 miles with my bike on one of those, including long trips from Utah to California, Oregon, and BC. No problems w/ damaging the bikes or the tailgate. Although that one appears to have straps (my Dakine didn't), I'd put a tiedown strap over the top of the bikes to keep 'em in place for longer trips.
It is an excellent way to transport bikes. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of mine when I sold my last truck ... I'm using an old blanket for now until I get another one.
