Yakima and Thule make bars that span your bed, and a clamp system to hold bikes on the bars. So rather than lay in the bed, the bikes "float" above it. I'm contemplating a set of my truck, or a front hitch. Front hitch has the appeal of being able to "cheat" at backing the TT into a tight spot... just unhook from the rear receiver and hook to the front one :)
