Our's is a BVG...it is a swing-a-way which we already owned-so we just use that. It is built like a tank. The added weight of the rack and up to 4 bikes improves the ride when loaded...the extra weight on the front axle must be a benefit?
We have traveled x-country with this setup...wouldn't have it any other way. Very convenient, and we like the bikes where we can see them.
Never had a problem with clearance.
You would have to look at different racks and see how they are designed, our's has a slight rise to it which helps ground clearance. But again, we didn't choose this for the front...we just happened to own it already...and it works fine.
