We have traveled x-country with this setup...wouldn't have it any other way. Very convenient, and we like the bikes where we can see them.
Never had a problem with clearance.
You would have to look at different racks and see how they are designed, our's has a slight rise to it which helps ground clearance. But again, we didn't choose this for the front...we just happened to own it already...and it works fine.

Edit; should mention the BVG holds bikes by cross-bar, it locks over the cross bar. Very sturdy. The standard rack holds 2 bikes, we purchased the extension to hold 4 bikes. We also have the ski rack/board accesory for ski camping.
It's a nice rack...just very heavy.
