I've used Thetford and Aqua Chem over the years. As far as odor, both do OK.
I clean my tanks pretty well at the end of each trip. I flush water until nothing brown comes out. Then we primarily use nothing, except dish washing water when we do dishes, we flush it down the potty. Haven't had odors in a long time.
But a couple weeks ago we purchased a new box of Thetford with the little digestable bags for a "just in case" moment. We did drop one in the tank on our way home last week-end with a couple gallons of water to slosh around. No odors, just felt it would help since it would be a couple more weeks before going out again and it's REALLY hot now, and any little bit of (anything) in the black tank can begin to smell real bad in a short time in this heat. No problem when continuously using the camper and dumping regularly, But when sitting, we like to keep a deodorizer in there.
Works for us. They all do a pretty good job of keeping odors down. Pick the one that strikes your attention and just try it. If it don't work to your satisfaction, try something different next time.
You'll eventually switch over to dishwashing liquid too.
