Black Tank Flusher

My new TT came with a built in black tank flusher. I was really excited about this on the new rig. I tried it out on our first trip out. I might be doing it wrong, but I can't say I was that impressed.

When the black tank was full I emptied the black tank then ran the rinser for 10-15 mins with the black tank valve open as per the instructions. I watched what emptied out of the black tank while running the rinser through the clear elbow and saw lots of stuff coming out. When no more stuff except water was running out I stopped the rinser. I wanted to see how well it did so I filled the black tank using the toliet. When I emptied the black tank after refilling it I saw lots of stuff coming out. Way more stuff than I saw when using the rinser.

What gives? Am I doing something wrong?
  • My main problem is low water pressure at some campgrounds that renders the system virtually useless. Instead, as others have stated, filling the tank with water and then dumping does the job.

X2 that it gets dirty pretty quickly again. My main reason is to make sure that I don't leave any residue or paper on the sensors.
  • Ditto on what everyone has said.

Or, maybe next time let the rinse go for 20 to 30 minutes instead of 10 to 15.
  • I have the built in rinser but when it runs clear we still use the old faithful "pooh wand" and it's amazing how much more paper it dislodges. Wife is OCD on the black tank so 5 minutes extra is worth not hearing from her. She helps so I can't complain!
  • I have the Flush King and it rinses the black tank really good and was like $45. Can't beat that.
  • I close the dump valve when running the rinser so water can accumulate and when I open the dump valve the water carries out solids that other wise would not come out. :)

The reason for that 'Caution' is mfg. lawyers covering their behinds......someone leaves valve closed and floods inside of rig.

I dump, then flush/rinse using OEm flush system with drain open then I close the drain valve and let the flush system flow. After about 5 mins I open drain valve and let the higher volume/level go whoosh. Then close the valve wait 30 seconds or so and shut down flush system (puts a few gallons or so of water back in tank for next time)

Then I dump grey tanks and pack up.......done

i agree, so far this is basically the way I do it, but instead of about 5 minutes once, i do it about 3 times for about 2-3 minutes each, you wont flood your TT if your standing there "managing" what your doing, runs clear for me every time, after that add a little water to the black tank, then release the grey and go home, works for me
  • I do the same except I have two tornado rinser's in my black tank and I usually clean it twice (I am a bit OCD about my black tank).

I'm not real OCD about waste tanks.......dump when full, rinse, add few gallons & call it good. They are going to get dirty again real soon.
  • Nope.......

Thing is the drain line is in the sidewall of tank (vs sloped bottom) so there is a lip that will hold some of the stuff. Need a high volume flow to push that stuff up & over that lip.

  • Sounds about right to me. I don't know if you're supposed to do this or not, but I close the black valve (after emptying and rinsing once) and fill the tank about 2/3s and empty it again. That usually cleans it out pretty well and I see a lot more come out after that.
