Black Tank smells

The black tank has a bad smell coming from it. I am using Pure Power
Blue as a waste digester and Odor eliminator. I know I probably need to flush the tank with the hose. But is there something else that I can put in the tank to help sanitize it? Also is there a way to sanitize or clean the gray tank?

I've been doing the geo method. Works great. What you could do is fill the tank at home with the geo method, drive to your next camping destination, and dump right away. Sometimes I even drain and flush my tank at the campground, fill about 10 gallons of water with laundry soap and fabric softner, drive back to our hometown, and dump and flush again. It's kind of disgusting how mush comes out the second time too.

The GEO method does NOT USE fabric softener
  • It is a septic holding tank…

if you want it to smell like lemons use it to make lemonade…

otherwise its going to stink either like septic or that awful smelling perfume made to put in it…

Best if the system has no problems and is designed right, if so, it will vent the odors to the outside and they will disperse into the outside air basically unnoticed…
Odors inside the trailer are a sign of a failure of some type, either in design, construction, or use…

Other than that water is all that is needed to keep it working efficiently and properly…
  • If your getting odors, then something is wrong with your plumbing system, No need to use anything but a little water. It truly amazes me at how many people spend money by stuffing down the drain. Now if only I could figure out a way for each of them to send me a dollar, I would never have any financial problems again.

  • Are you sure it is the black tank?
Under the bathroom sink there ay be a vent for the sink. It is common. The vent is essentially a one way valve allowing air in but shutting when not in use. The vent sometimes hangs and smell come up from the grey tank.
If you are sure the black tank is the culprit go to a pool supply store and get "SHOCK "(sodium dichlor). One purpose of shock is to breakdown organic waste contaminants. Add water to at least 3/4 full and drive around. let sit in tank for a day or two then drain. Problem should be solved
  • Sanitize? It is a waste tank. It is going to smell some.
You can use same tank deodorizer in both tanks.
