Not necessarily true. An oil analysis can tell you if you have small amounts of coolant or fuel in the oil. That could alert you to a developing problem before it becomes a major problem. Also it can tell you how well your oil is doing. I noticed when I changed from Mobil Delvac 1300 to Shell Rotella and then back to Mobile Delvac 1300, that iron numbers went up with Rotella and back down when I went back to Delvac. Now I use strictly Mobil Delvac 1300.
Besides, it gives me the warm fuzzies, and that's worth a few bucks. :)
We put less than 5K miles per year on our Ram Cummins. I know I don't drive enough miles between oil changes for miles driven between changes to be a concern. Buy I recently had Blackstone do an analysis of our diesel truck oil because it can alert you to potential problems, and for older diesels, in particular, injectors beginning to fail -- something it is best to know about early, so they can be replaced, potentially avoiding damage to the engine. And as mentioned above, the analysis can alert you to other developing problems. Our analysis came back "normal". I'll check it again in about two years.
