Like stated above, if you have trouble holding the bar get a 2ft breaker bar with the correct size socket. It will make loading and unload the bars a lot easier.
You can use more or less links as needed, I think the manual states to start at 9 and adjust from there. The best thing to do is load your camper like your ready to camp, weigh your truck then weigh you truck and camper adjusting links until you place the appropriate amount of weight back on the front axle.

I normally run 10-11 links depending on how loaded I am. With 10 links engaged I just raised the bed of the truck pretty high and the chains come right off. With 11 links engaged it will still have some tension on the bars and it will pop loose. My suggestion would be to raise the bed of your truck a little higher and hold on to the wrench, don't limp wrist it.
