Not sure about the X5, but unibody construction does not preclude use of a weight distribution hitch as a rule. It's entirely dependent on the manufacturer. I'm using a WDH on my unibody Grand Cherokee as recommended by the owner's manual and I haven't folded my car in half (yet).
