Box covers - flip/fold vs retracting and btw 2 rams

Hi
Anyone have experience with a folding cover such as Undercover Flex versus a retracting hard cover. I was thinking the retracting ones would make the box easier to access but wonder if the work well in the snow and ice. Folding ones let you use the whole bed but I can't see the need for myself.

I'm trying to decide between two used trucks. One has an undercover the other has nothing. I know it's a slight difference on a 40k purchase but might make a difference.

Was also wanting thoughts on how much you would value a ram 1500 sport with 15,000 km compared to one with 30,000km. Price is the same but the one with more miles has the cover, spray liner, tube step rails, spare set of winter tires and mud flaps. Other than the higher millage one having a rear window defrost they are identically equipped. Ive never thought about rear defrost - needed in Alberta?

It would cost me around 3k to add the extras (these are all things I do want) to the truck. So would you rather have 3k in your pocket and a truck with a few more miles or the other way around?

Thanks.
  • I had a Roll N Lock on my last truck and have a Retrax retractable tonneau on my new truck. The Retrax is far superior, the hard surface is much easier to keep clean, it opens and closes much easier with no straps, and locks in any position with the keyhole being easily accessible on the drivers side of the truck. I also think it looks much better.

I have no problem locking it in front of my fifth wheel hitch and do it every time I tow. I also like the fact that it will retract fully into the canister and still gives a full view of the bed including the fifth wheel hitch while hitching.

I don't know for sure how it would be in frozen conditions but suspect it would be fine. I would not hesitate to recommend one.
  • I thought the retracting ones were supposed to lock at any place - maybe only some do.
  • I have a retracting cover and wish I had the hard folding type. The roll up covers are hard to lock in place when partially rolled up in front of the hitch. So that the stuff in front of the truck is out of the rain.
