Thanks for the replies. To answer your questions...my trailer is 5k pounds dry. My brake controller is a tekonsha prodigy proportional brake controller. When i say the brake line blew i mean it sprung a leakjust above the rear diff. The dealer said it was squirting brake fluid whenever you apply the brakes. His initial assessment was that he could see no signs of physical damage.
I will wait to see the final report.
No vehicle mods.

It could have been an unidentified defect in the tubing. This happens sometimes in manufacturing. Bending it over the diff could have exacerbated the condition and eventually it finally ruptured under pressure of normal braking. It is quite possible this could have happened had you never towed anything with the truck at all.
I often see 5K pound utility trailers towed by landscaping companies and construction companies behind Toyotas. Most of them do not have trailer brakes and it seems they are performing well as contractor work vehicles.
Fortunately no one was hurt and no other damage was done. Replacing the brake line should be a relatively simple process. With parts in hand it should take no more than a couple of hours to replace the line and bleed the system.
As for the trailer, I would try to do as someone else suggested and beg, borrow or steal another truck to get the trailer home and save on the campsite fees.
