To the OP, I am glad that you are okay and something worse didn't happen.
I had an experience this past summer that I would say goes along with this whole topic and debate over the brake system. I acquired a 1986 Pontiac Sunbird and while putting it on the flatbed trailer the rear right brake line went. While it seemed like the pedal went to the floor, I did still have brakes.
The mechanic I use lives about 7 miles from my house and I drove the car there and I can tell you I definitely had brakes but it also felt like the pedal would go to the floor. They weren't great, but I was able to slow the car down as needed. As a side note, it was all country roads and I went later in the evening to minimize the traffic I would encounter in case someone was concerned about me driving without brakes.
I am assuming that this vehicle has a dual reservoir system and that is why I would have had brakes. I wonder why a manufacturer would still use a single reservoir system today? With all of the litigation it wouldn't take much for someone to sue and show that someone else is doing it because it's a fail-safe.
