I don't have a clue if your families vehicles are death traps.
But I had to make sure CUSTOMERS vehicles were repaired 100% perfectly, especially with brakes. There is no room for error. "Just good enough" doesn't cut it, when people who trust you to fix their car. Or during racing for that matter.
Btw, I haven't worked on every model of car out there, but generally, the master cylinder runs out of travel before the pedal can actually contact the floorboard.
