Break away

On a recent trip I had my convertor running (growling) and really nothing on in 12V. I was puzzled because this was OK when I had a lot of lights on, but would stop when I tirned them off, but this trip it would not shut off. This went on for 2 days when I discovered that the break away cable to the brakes was pulled out. I usually have it attached through a safety chain. I plugged it back in, and VOILA! it stopped the convertor noise.

I would definitely get then checked out. Just imagine driving for a several hundred miles with one foot on the truck brakes...

Each brake magnet will pull around 3AMPs...

Be on the safe side and somehow confirm you still have good trailer brakes... Both the magnets and the brake shoes can all be used up by now after being ON for a couple of days...

Prove it that a electro magnet is damaged after a prolonged application of 12V.

This is a myth propagated via 'net.

They ARE designed to take 12V without harm, period.

The are designed to operate a long time with 12V applied.

No one has presented evidence of a melted or burned up electromagnet due to prolonged ELECTRICAL operation but the myth continues.

Check em if it makes you feel better but chances are NOTHING will be wrong with them...
  • I paid close attention to the brakes on the way home today, and all seems OK. I just mentioned it here so that others could gain by the info.
  • The converter cooling fan ran continuously because it was trying to keep up on the battery draw through you brakes..

After two days you probably have brake damage (magnets). Hopefully not.
