Are you sure that those LAFD vehicles were not Hemi powered? I've seen more E450 cutaways using the V10 gasser than I have seen of any configuration Ram chassis cabs. Almost all class 5 tow trucks I still see running around the city are Ford F550's - They used to be almost exclusively diesel and now I hear few driving by that are also using the V10 gasser (I work close to a popular tow away zone and get to see my share of them in my little part of the world).

Blow up the pic below, that looks like a clean idle sticker on the fender. I remember them to be diesel.
