You are right about that! Towing heavy with high horsepower is a recipe for trans failure. This is one reason why tuners like EFI Live are so popular. With just a few clicks of a rotary switch I can go from a 515 rwhp race tune, 475 rwhp semi-race tune, 450 rwhp street daily driver tune, or a 390 rwhp tow tune. No longer do you have to spend 15-20 minutes changing your tuning when you need to tow.
Of course a good custom tune with transmission tuning that increase line pressure and firms up the shifts will go a long way in helping your transmission last longer at higher power levels.
