Briggs and Stratton inverter generator

I just got my generator back from some maintenance and a tune up.
The dealer mention even after all I put it through that it was in great running shape.
It got me thinking. I have never seen anyone else that uses a Briggs and Stratton inverter. Of course Honda, Yamaha and now champion as a cheap alternative.

I got it for $599 on sale and it has been very reliable.

    I'm sure you mean "that much quieter" ... because they are. ;) That said, any generator regardless of brand, regardless of whether it's a "quiet" inverter model, is a man made machine that is producing an unnatural noise in a natural environment, regardless of whether you feel you can carry on a conversation standing beside it or your neighbour doesn't seem to notice it. It's noise and it's unnatural and the only way to beat that is to either not run it at all or to properly enclose it so the racket it makes can't radiate out to the rest of the world. I've managed to do that pretty well with my own genset noise reduction box, know I could do even better if I were willing to put more $$$ into it, but at 20' it truly is barely detectable, enclosed in the box which in turn is enclosed in the back of my Avalanche. Sitting open on the ground though even a Honda EU2000i is still too noisy, yours with the noise ratings it has would be much worse regardless of how "quiet" you think it may be ... the numbers don't lie. ;)

    As some know, I recently had it in for maintenance after two years of operation.
    The reason being, is that on that beach site that I boon dock on, I had it sitting on a pallet off the beach sand (I have since switched to using the back of the truck).
    Anyway, the pallet sunk into the sand, and the thing ended up taking about 4 cups of sand into the unit and the enclosure. It was running a bit rough and that is why I took it in. But the maintenance guy said it was working still like a champ and is now perfect. I was expecting a huge bill... Didn't happen. $100 for the tune up.
    So I consider what I have put it through was abuse and it is still starting on the first pull...after what will be it's third year of service.
    Also, one Christmas ago, we had a bad icestorm and it knocked out power for a few days. I ran this guy outside for two straight days to power our furnace, TV for the kids to watch Christmas movies, and the tree. No problem what so ever.
  • It's good to hear a positive report on any inverter generator that isn't a blue or red version. I have seen this model in the past and often wondered about their performance and overall durability. Thanks for the heads-up on this generator, could very well be a solid choice for someone who doesn't want to spend too much $$$ on an item they will only use sporadically when camping.
  • I have never had my Generator side by side with a Honda or Yamaha....but I can tell you that I can stand right next to my B&S and have a conversation (which seems to be the most popular measurement).
    So if the Honda and Yamaha are really that much louder, God bless them. But I have my Generator sitting in the back of my truck with the tailgate up and can't hear it from the next campsite.
    What I always do, is start it and walk to my neighbours and ask them "Is that generator going to bother you for a couple hours a day?" To which the response 95% of the time is "what generator".
    It is a bit loud though when not in power save mode...
    I should also add that where I boondock is a beach site on lake Ontario and in 5 years we have never had a need for the air conditioner.....

    Irrelevant in this case as the OP is here in Canada where paralleling dual gensets is considered taboo ... silly, but true. :S My own EU2000i is otherwise identical to the US versions but doesn't have the parallel connectors, 'though in my case I don't care anyway. ;)


    Interesting and I was not aware of that so thanks for the info. However, since the first post made no mention of Canada specifics (yes I can see he is in Toronto) and this is a world wide forum, others outside Canada should be informed with all the information. :)

    I noticed the Spec on yours says '38% quieter'... Then reading down in some comments I finally read 59 dBA. Since the motor varies according to load you really need to know the low and high dBA number.


    This isn't a Honda EU2000i or Yamaha EF2000iS ... this B&S PS2000 noise spec is 59 dbA @ 1/4 load, measured at 7 metres, which is dramatically louder than a red or blue which both measure around the same noise level @ full load ... HUGE difference. :E

    You accidentally left out what I believe is another critically important feature of why the Honda, Yamaha or Champion are bought. The ability to run two of those generators in parallel to have enough Amps to run the trailer's AC. I did not see that the B&S inverter generator Powersmart P2000 had that capability.

    Its all about how much noise they produce and how they hold up after 5-10 years... The Honda EU2000i operates at 53 to 59 dBA... My 2KW Honda EU2000i was purchased from Mayberrys in 2008 and still cranks on the first or second pull on the cord... Changing oil is about all I do to it for maintenance. Sits secured in my covered tailgate corner of my truck bed. I use it all the time for one thing or another. Sure gets a big smile from the elderly lady in the Walmart parking lot standing next to her car with the hood up....
