Having broken 2 spings on my 5th wheel, I would vote for heavier springs bu also replace all the shackles and bolts as well. 1 tow on a flat bed tow truck for a 30 mile trip costs $1200. Good Sam Emergency roadside service payed for the total tow:):):)
Broke a spring outside Vail and it (only) cost $600 for a flatbed tow but took the police 12 hours to find someone willing on a Friday night.
That ended me at a trailer repair shop that was also a uHaul franchise. Funny side story, he confiscated my tires because they were stamped uHaul not for sale, despite me showing him the receipt. No biggie one tire was shot and wouldn't match the survivor anyway. Let him have that victory.
Replaced both sides with heavier springs but only new hardware on the broken side.
Fast forward a year or two, hardware on the other side breaks, outside Marquette on a holiday weekend. No tow trucks want the business. This time the spring held but the clamp or whatever it's called that holds to the axle broke.
A passer-by lived in the area stopped to help and had enough of a shop to rig up a new clamp.
Was able to hobble along to the shop he worked at and we put on a new clamp in the parking lot the next morning.
This summer I installed new springs and associated hardware myself, taking it all apart, cleaning what I could and putting all back together.
