"Just because a frame is hydroformed it does not mean that it is formed from a HSLA/HSS steel. The frames of General Motors’ current generation of trucks use hydroformed mild steel in the front section while the mid and rear sections utilize a HSLA C-Channel frame design. To the best of my knowledge the Dodge Ram hydroformed frame is entirely mild steel, with Dodge's TSB 13-001-03 - Frame Alterations seemingly supporting this.
HSLA steel is covered under ASTM A-1011 and is easily welded with most common welding processes. Proper filler and gas selection is a critical factor, as well as knowing what HSLA Classification you are dealing with. Common GMAW/GTAW filler material would be ER80S-Ni1, ER80S-D2, ER90S-D2 and ER90S-G."
