Many of us here in Alaska figure out how to carry additional fuel for reasons such as these. Last summer while we were traveling around the state, we had left Tok in the am, made it up to Delta Junction, and fueled up. Our next leg was to drive south on the Richardson highway to Paxson, fuel up their, as they were listed as the only fuel before traveling across the 130+ mile gravel two-track. We arrived in Paxson with several other travelers looking for fuel. They told us that there state permit had expired witht the previous owners and they were still trying to get reinspected, so they had no fuel. I was below a half tank due to heavy winds. So going back to Delta Junction was out. They told us that Tangle Lakes had fuel. They were 23 miles up the Denali highway. We ended up paying nearly $6 a gallon, but with no other fuel for over 120 mile, and all the travelers were like me with at or below 1/4 tank... Some people even had to be shown how to use the 1950's vintage gas pump! All it registered in the rolling numbers was gallons with a video camera watching it, then the lodge owner would use a calculator to calculate the bill. Definitely classic remote Alaska! After that trip, I try to carry an extra 5 to 10 gallons when traveling around the state so to be sure I can make it to the next place!
Congratulations on the graduation and the completion of a bucket list item. And come back soon! Alaska is a great place to explore!
