I would suggest he call the State Agency that monitors gas stations / pumps to have the station inspected and problem documented, if it is not already too late.
I bought a tank full of gas with water in it years ago. Brand new vehicle. I called our Dept of Agriculture ( I think ) which monitors those pumps in NC. Guy came out and took samples to document. Station manager admitted they had a problem. Corporate office refused to pay. I sued and issued a subpoena to the State inspector. With his testimony it was a slam dunk.
Just saying, don't trust them to do the right thing. They may or may not.
