As you start fueling (and NOT at full pressure), let the nozzle rest on the lip of the fuel tube, just enough to see fuel coming out. THEN if it's ok, put it all the way in. At least with my truck I can do this.
It's good insurance against this sort of disaster. And yes, I do this almost every fuelup. Takes a couple seconds. Also, the odor of diesel is quite different from that of gasoline.
