I've had contaminated fuel a handful of times over the last 30+ years, but nothing more severe than rough running or terrible mileage on a tankful, never to the point where it disabled the vehicle altogether.
The point is that the newer generation of diesels are much more sensitive to contaminated fuel, so it takes a lot less to sideline them than it used to.
