We have had a bunk house for a while but the bunks were only open about 1/3 of the length. A wall covered the rest so the kids couldn't roll out. Got a new camper with open bunks and my son rolled out the first night. Luckily he was on the lowest one so the fall wasn't to far. I'm looking for options to help with this because I don't want them to fall and get hurt. Thought about some type of bed rails but I think all the ones that I have seen wouldn't work because of the hinged area at the base. I don't think it would fit between the side of the bunk and the mattress. Anybody got a good idea. It would be great if it was a good/cheap idea since we just purchased a new trailer.Thanks

4 hooks - 2 on each end and a cargo net. To open, unhook cargo net and simply tuck under the mattress. Tell your son he's on a Pirate Ship and the net is the ships rigging. He'll love it.

My sons have both fallen out of the upper bunks and hurt themselves pretty good. Part of the problem was the slippery nylon sleeping bags. They now use regular sheets with a blanket on top. We put a pool noodle under the fitted sheet as well so they can't roll out. No problems since.

I like the noodle idea if it works for you. I made a small rail and used angle brackets, like the big thick ones that could mount on a wall and hold a shelf. I screwed one leg of them through the floor of the upper bunk so the other leg would come up out from under the mattress, and then I attached a couple of upright wooden pieces (mostly for better looks than the galvanized steel) and a cross piece. It didn't go the full length but left the foot and open near the ladder just enough that if they did fall out it would be a feet first type of thing that should wake them before it happened. It only attached with screws under the mattress.

We ordered some magic bumper portable safety guard rails from Amazon. They are small enough to not be intrusive, yet big enough to be effective. And they are rather inexpensive.

We use a flip down bed rail, and you still get easy access to the bunk.

Pool Noodles. They work really well. Put them under a sheet along the exposed edges. When my kids were toddlers and moving to a real bed from the crib, I used pool noodles instead of buying toddler rails. Same with the bunks in the trailer. I've tested it out for myself and it's pretty clear you've reached the end of the bed. The regular sized ones work well, but the fatter ones are more of a sure thing. It's pretty difficult to roll over those.

Pool noodle is a good idea. Our middle daughter fell out of the middle bunk on our last trip. I think she'll figure it out without the noodle eventually but I'm concerned about damage to my floor. :B

We used toddler bed rails. The kind that have anchor straps that go under the bed so the person's weight keeps them secure. As stated by others the slippery sleeping bags can make things worse. We use only regular bedding.
