I think your plan is great, just do as I do when I visit my Grand daughter in Ireland, keep in mind you need to drive on the OTHER side of the road. :)
You are correct with your recollections, but circumstances have changed our ideas a little.
We are Unique, but not alone. Many from Oz have done it and succeeded. I have researched purchasing as a non US resident and have no concerns, thanks anyway. It's the selling in another state I'm wondering about.
