I think you are going to be in a unique situation. If I recall you are looking at coming to the states and buying a RV and TV and tour the states. I would call the state Department of Motor vehicles where you plan to buy and sell. You may have some unique issues not being a US resident.
I think your plan is great, just do as I do when I visit my Grand daughter in Ireland, keep in mind you need to drive on the OTHER side of the road. :)
You are correct with your recollections, but circumstances have changed our ideas a little.
We are Unique, but not alone. Many from Oz have done it and succeeded. I have researched purchasing as a non US resident and have no concerns, thanks anyway. It's the selling in another state I'm wondering about.
My concerns are more about registering the vehicles would be more of a concern. I am sure there are correct methods on how to do it, but would be more of what I would be checking into than the actual purchase.
If you have a planed route with different start and end points I would be as I stated before is contact the respective states as to requirements for buying and registering the vehicles in the state you start in and for selling in the state you end in.
If you start the process before you leave you may have most done and all the necessary forms before you arrive in the states.
As stated before sounds like a great adventure!
That's what I meant actually, I have researched and talked it through with many others that have purchased and registered a vehicle in the US as a non US resident.
I am prepared to travel back to Texas to sell the vehicle in the state that I registered it in, if it comes to that. Then get an internal flight back to LA and carry on. No biggy.
It's going to be a great adventure, can't wait! Only 8 weeks to go.
