So I didn't do my homework two years ago when I bought my '11 F-150 EcoBoost with its 1400 lb payload and my 1000 lb tongue on my trailer. The payload has been bugging me which has had me looking at bigger trucks. A local dealer has a 2012 F350 Lariat SRW with the 6.7 PowerStroke engine with 34,000 miles. Immaculate new condition and loaded up. 11,500 gvwr package. He's asking $45kI think I'm going to buy it. I'm not loosing money on the trade in, in fact I have positive equity which is good.This will be my first diesel and am wondering what maintenance would need to be done on it since it already has 34k miles?Thanks!Todd

Change the oil & oil filter (13 qts) every 6000 miles or so. Very easy to do by yourself, the oil filter is right on the bottom of the engine and easy to get at. Change the fuel filters every 20,000 or so, also very easy took me 15-20 minutes. Check for water on the frame mounted fuel filter a couple of times a month, there is a small drain valve right on the bottom.Otherwise it's just the standard truck maintenance. I haven't done anything else but check tire pressures on ours so far. I do add lubricity additive to the fuel. I did have a battery develop a crack and the dealer replaced it.BK

Looks like you have the same truck. What is your payload?

3400 or so, I'd have to check the door sticker. We hauled our 5ver up and down the Rockies last year, 8000 miles, with not the least trouble. It did slow down to 50 on a long 12% grade but that was the only time it seemed to be working hard. 4WD costs you some payload, but we get off on the gravel dirt roads a lot and the 4WD is worth it.Haven't had the 5ver out so far this year since we've been having suspension/bearing problems but hope to get that fixed this week.BK

34,000 on a 2012 diesel, no problem thats a lot of driving and the diesel loves that. If it were me I would run a CarFax report and then have the dealer change all of the fluids and filters (everything except maybe powersteering including axles) to reset all of the maintenance schedules to a known value and just do the factory recommeded schedule from there.

Look around... I spent only 3K more and bought a brand new 12 Ram 3500 Dually Laramie...

Yeah that could be a concern, after your first 250,000 miles or so.

Everything mentioned should be part of the purchase if from a dealer. I sure would not spend that kind of cash at a dealer and then still need to do the maintenance that should have been done in the first place.

Is this a Ford dealer? How much warranty period are they giving you? Have you ran a carfax type report?. Even if all the above pass, the price is very high IMO.

Unfortunately the finance manger took it on vacation so I didn't even have a chance to see it in person but based on the pics it sure is nice looking!

Not knowing the service history of this truck here's what I would do:

1. Oil/Filter change (Using a CJ4 API rated diesel oil 5W40 or 10W30)
2. Fuel filter change (Using a Motorcraft fuel filter)
3. Enjoy the truck... They run and pull like a beast! :B

I would work them hard on the price and also have a quote for a new truck for comparison purposes. Good luck and let us know the outcome.
