I'd just say Diesel and budget don't go well together. Whether you are talking about purchase premium up front, or the significantly higher cost of repair and maintenance work.
With the limitations you've shared, I'd strongly consider a V10 or large displacement Gas V8 motor from any of the brands.
If you bought a high mileage V10, and had to rebuild it immediately, it would likely be a 1/3 of the cost to replace a diesel engine of similar vintage.
