The 6.7L is by far a much more reliable overall package, but if the fuel pump goes, that's a $10k+ repair.
$10k for a fuel pump replacement?!? How does that work?
The Bosch CP4 has aluminum pistons, and if the pistons wears into the walls, aluminum shrapnel fouls all the lines and the injectors. Replacing either of those items is a lot of labor. The pump itself is only a small part of the overall replacement costs.
Note: This affected Chevy's and VWs and BMWs as well. Ford just had the most incidents of non-covered replacements. The others managed claims better it seams, but regardless, costs are high outside of warranty. Failure rates have improved a lot (with the help of improved coatins and lower injection pressure), but it still happens. And anything with that many miles is likely to have one of the early versions fo the pump.
