I was just in the same situation as you and I bought a 2001 F250 with the 7.3l diesel and standard 6 speed transmission. The truck has 295,000 miles on it. I enjoy working on it, so didn’t mind fixing a few things when I got it home and changed all the fluids in it. I put very few miles on it and it pulls my trailer great. When I was looking I was also considering the v10, or the 5.9 Cummins ( with a standard trans) and the 8.1l Chevy/Allison was on the short list. I passed on a lot of trucks before I found the truck for me. Long story short, for what you want to do, skip the truck payment, pay cash for a well maintained truck and enjoy your travels.
