GM's 6.0L gas engine is reliable and very capable. I tend to tow around 2500rpm in 5th gear, but it really wakes up over 3500rpm. The 2007.5+ 6-spd transmission really helps keep the engine in its powerband. I would not recommend the 6.0L mated to the 4-spd in prior generation trucks.
I have this engine in a Suburban with 6-spd and 3.73 axle bought new now with 103k miles. As a daily driver in mixed commuting we get 12mpg winter and 13mpg summer. Highway non-towing we have gotten 15-18mpg depending on temps and speed. Towing: I budget 8mpg. I typically tow at 72mph and recognize I could get better FE. We have towed on two 2000+ mile trips besides summer weekends within 250 miles from home.
