Cable snap while setting up on campsite?

What do you do if, while cranking up the pop-up at the campsite and one of the cable snap!

Never happen to me, hope it never will!
I am a yang girl (23), usually camping alone with my nephews and nieces (7,10 and 13 years old)... this is my biggest fear with my Pop-up!

I honestly don't know what you supposed to do in a situation like this... so I am asking now to be better prepare in case it will happen.

p.s, I have a 2008 Rockwood if it matter.
Thanks.

  • We had one break on an old StarCraft while raising it. It was hard to manually raise and when we got it up I put an oar from my inflatable boat under it and then duct taped the oar to a vertical strut so it would come down in the middle of the night.
We did get it lowered ok and made it home. In three days we got rid of it and bought our first hard sided trailer.

  • Carry spares and learn how to install them is the best way to handle this problem.

    Here's a site to help:

  • Let's hope if this happens that you are in a campground with a lot of macho men around to offer help. :B I am sure they would offer help.
  • I had it happen with my month old Bronco Palomino pop top camper. The lift mechanism went south while I was trying to get it lowered. One corner would not come down.

The system is basically a bunch of over sized speedometer cables that to the raising and lowering. Drove the thing home with some tie downs holding the very skewed roof down... Got lots of looks on the way.
  • I've seen people prop up the broken corner with 2x4 or sturdy stick/branch cut to length.

We have hard side, so don't need to worry about it, but I always have a saw or axe of some kind with when camping, and I assume many other folks do too, so it seems like the easiest solution to pull off with tools most folks would have on hand.

I suppose if you were feeling super handy you could bring cable, and all the tools required to re-cable it ;)
