Cabover Struts Rekindled

I've seen various previous comments about cabover struts on here and other forums but most of them are fairly dated or provide limited feedback when it comes to newer campers. Several articles I've found say that because of the improvements in truck camper designs and materials struts are no longer necessary.

So my question is for those with truck camper's 2010 or newer that have installed cabover struts, what is your opinion of struts since installing them and are you still using them? Before I go drilling holes in my 2015 1172 I'd like a little more feedback discussion if possible.

Do not drive out from under your camper when unloading without removing these things. I've come close twice now. Seems my attention is directed towards the rear as I unload the camper, not forward where the struts are.

I agree from first hand experience! Cost about $200 to repair and remount. Had a boat repair guy do the work.
  • I know the newer trucks have stronger frames and less movement then the older trucks, but after having recently driven from CO to Louisiana, the road in section was so nasty I thought there was a lot of motion in the camper especially going around Dallas on their roads! With some of the long trips we take I think we could see an advantage wth the struts.
  • I think Lance is the only one that advocates and sells the struts. I have 'em and they are great! Before I got them, my truck felt like it was on a trampoline or pogo stick as the front/back rock-n-roll motion was pretty significant on some roads where there were expansion joints. After I put them on, things settled right down.

  • Worked great on my 2008 RAM 3500 and 2011 Lance 1050S.

The 2013 RAM 3500 cab was too long to use the struts.

If you are thinking about trading the truck don't drill the holes.

I sure missed the struts while traveling US69 in Oklahoma last weekend. The truck frame is stiffer and it has less motion, but there were times....
  • Came with my Lance, used them on every trip in the past 5 years and I will probably continue to do so. You do remove them for off highway excursions as they are only designed for on highway porpoising control.
