But that's a product of the 10k lb GVWR which is artificially low for various reasons unrelated to capability. Most of the 3/4 ton diesels have axle weight ratings in the 12-12.5k combined range. On half tons the payload rating is more straightforward. You pretty much have what you have.

IdaD, I suspect you were thinking of some 1 tons that were "officially" derated to 10,000# GVWR for tax/license purposes.
With 10,000# "3/4 tons" available currently I'm not sure that happens any more.
