California Body Type ( BTM) Codes

After over a year my truck was totalled the DMV finally ran my paperwork and I officially have a salvage title. One of the final steps was having to take my truck down to th DMV and have them do a VIN Verification. I was dumb enough to take my truck down to the DMV with my camper mounted. The DMV employee right off the bat started saying she was going to categorize my truck as a PM (pick w/ camper mounted) instead of the PK (pickup) it was always coded as. I got into a pretty good argument with her saying my truck is separate from the camper and the camper can be removed at anytime. After a heated argument another employee came out and agreed it was a pickup, but said it should be labeled as a VA (all other commericial vehicles). It looks like I should have let her label it as a PM because this is in the Automobile category and is exempt from the high weight fees I have to pay. Registration for my truck every year is $338 and $257 of that is the Weight fee. By coding my truck as a PM I would only have to pay $81 a year! I guess The only catch is I would have to leave the camper on the truck all the time, or risk getting pulled over if an officer sees there is no camper in the back. So for those of you that leave your campers on all the time you are able to re-categorize your truck as a PM and not have to pay the high weight fees California charges.

  • CA is tough when it comes to registration fess. I only use my 4500 to tow the 5th wheel travel trailer. I fought with the DMV to get it registered as a motor coach but they would only register it as a commercial vehicle, it's a 2007 and I pay over $800 per year for registration.

What was worse is Allstate wanted to charge commercial truck insurance rates for it. So I went with Progressive and they registered it as a MH. Nearly a $1000 savings over Allstate.
  • In Arkansas a pickup registered as non-commercial is around $30/year. My Commercially licensed 3500 for weight class up to 25,000 lbs. GCWR is $285/year.
  • In Colorado we don't pay anything for the camper. They do however nick you pretty good for the truck registration.
  • Just makes me glad I live in Oregon..... Camper is $81 every two years, truck isn't too far from that every two years.
  • No officer would ever stop you for not having your camper in the bed. Most would not know the difference and the rest would not care. Im not knocking law enforcement, I did it for 20 years and laws and restrictions like these dont rate at the top of list of importance.
  • I have never taken mine off the truck (don't intend too) and did just what you are saying. It is no longer categorized as a commercial (weight fees) vehicle and I too saved hundreds... and on a 19 year old truck! AAA did tell me that even if I hauled "stuff like plywood, etc. in the camper" and got caught I would have to back pay for commercial registration.. How stupid. Anyway, kudos to you! :)
