While good advice, do you do the same even with your utility bills? Do we really need to get proof of mailing on all our bills now? My mistake here is not going into their office. I just wanted to let others know to watch out
Well if you're going to complain about being bended over at being charged a late fee because your check "got lost in the mail", then maybe you should do it for everything.
Why should anyone simply take your word that you mailed them a check and it got lost? Do you realize how often people lie about that? Should landlords' waive late fees because their renters claim "the check got lost in the mail"? Should any business?
Everyone here is calling it a scam and whining about evil California again.
There is nothing evil about it and there is no scam. California state government offices base receipt of payment on the postmark (I believe you can find that in state law). They don't hold a check uncashed so they can get more money out of you.
On the other hand, they don't waive late fees because of an unsubstantiated claim of lost mail.
In this day and age of electronic bill pay, etc., getting proof of mailing for the few times you actually send a check through the mail is not unreasonable if you want to be sure to avoid a late fee.
Whether you choose to wait in line at the DMV or at the Post Office is your choice. But no one is screwing you.
Really, and you can say that with a straight face? I think you are trying to make it sound that I did this wrong because I used the mail system we all use, and that they are the victims of such a system and not me. I think you are off the rails buddy. Why put on someone's registration renewal "return by mail only" in this day and age as you stated and not be held responsible? Fool me once my friend. And yes, I am one of the deplorables that are the victims of a new California.
Nobody is a victim. It's called LIFE. You are responsible to ensure your payment arrives timely - whether rent, mortgage, utility bills, credit cards, DMV,insurance, etc.
If you don't want to chance paying a late fee, you do what you have to - certified mail, priority mail, go in, go to AAA. If you don't, and it doesn't arrive timely, then shut up and pay the late fee.
It doesn't matter why your notice says "by mail only". If you questioned it, you could have called and asked. Maybe it was an error. Maybe not. But it is still YOUR responsibility to pay it timely - and that includes accounting for the mail service.
Really buddy, you are off the rails if you think you should not have to pay late fees because your payment didn't arrive timely and you can't prove that you actually mailed it.
So thanks for the schooling. At 60 years of age I really didn't know how to pay my bills. You are being nothing but antagonistic. The facts I pointed out were as follows:
1. To be mailed only (unusual by DMV standards)
2. Their forced mailing turns into a late fee
We can dispute how the bill should be paid and whether your method is best, however the system shouldn't make you jump through extra hoops. This is my point. I went to DMV this morning and had to fill out a statement of facts. They themselves could not answer why my statement says by mail only. They also told me they are 6 weeks out on registrations. I did not get charged a late fee because of the statement of facts I filled out. Your presumption that I don't know how to pay bills, is nothing but contentious. If we don't live up to your standards then just stay away from the topic.
The "by mail only" is a completely separate issue then your complaint that you got charged a late fee. Nice the DMV waived it, but it IS YOUR responsibilty.
Perhaps my standards are too high for you. I take responsibilty for MY actions and I expect others to take responsibility for their actions. These "poor me, I screwed up and they don't care" posts are exactly the type of thing all the old folks on this forum whine about with "this new generation" - yet every generation is doing the same thing. Evil companies, evil government, evil people - when it all comes down to "I made a mistake".
That is the first thing I agree with you about. I always take responsibility when I make a mistake and your standards are not to high. Understand that I am not whining, just trying to show that the system is broke.
