Calking around air conditioner shroud on roof

I have a small 16ft trailer, with a small side mounted air. On the roof is your typical air mounted plastic cover. I see four small round areas that have lap sealant on top of the screws (I think) Is this the only area of chalking I have to worry about. I would assume there is chalking underneath the plastic shroud up on the roof. Is there? If so, I gather I have to scrap the lap sealant of the screws unscrew and take of the plastic cover to check lap sealant under the cover. Is this correct, or?

  • If the OP has a wall mounted AC, the plastic shroud is probably a vent. Just caulk around the outside edge of the vent. You don't need to pull it apart.
  • No wait a minute. I understood the schroud is on the roof. I figured it was an old rooftop ac shroud. If the shroud you are talking about is on the roof overhanging the wall ac all you need to do is run a bead of calk around the roofline of the entire overhanging shroud.
  • It is a side mount (in the wall) air. Where the air is mounted and directly outside the wall is the filter, I am sure. On top of the roof is the shroud. Is this shroud for the AC? Anyway, there is lap over the screws, and Rollnhome is telling me under the plastic shroud on the roof, above the AC mounted to the wall inside the trailer, I need to check chalking under the shroud. Correct?
The air is just a window looking type AC.
  • Hi,

There should not be caulking on the screws on top of the A/C shroud. This is so that you can remove it easy. And any water leaking past those screws will land in the A/C unit basepan, and drain harmlessly to the roof through it's drip pan drain. Water gets into the A/C all the time, this is normal.

If you are getting water inside, and to prevent rain from getting inside, it is best to tighten the A/C gasket and hold down bolts about every 3 years. Take off the inside shroud. Clean the filter at this time too, as it probably will need it. Look for 4 bolts, in the corners of the part you are looking at, for 1/2" or 9/16" bolt heads. Tighten them 'slightly' not crank them down, or even get them much past finger tight. Perhaps finger tight +1 turn? As you tighten the bolts, it compresses the gasket, and then you go back and compress it a bit more in 3 years, and more in 6 years. Once it is fully compressed, and then starts leaking, it is time to remove the A/C from the roof, replace the gasket, and start all over. . ..

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • Yes If you do not have a roof AC you need to make sure the opening is sealed. If there is a roof air you need a gasket between the roof air and the roof and to seal the shroud screws with calking.
  • If it is a normal roof AC there is a gasket between the AC and the roof not caulk.
