As I understand it, the only differences between modern 2500/F250s and their big brothers is the suspension/tires/wheels. And that should be covered by the GAWR ratings.
Most modern RAM 2500s have a rear GAWR of 6500# while the 3500 has 7000#. Only 500# difference.
And with the 2500's empty rear axle curb weight of maybe 3000-3500#, that leaves maybe 3000-3500# of available payload on the rear axle.
On Rams the tires and wheels are the same as long as you don't get the base 17" wheels on the 2500, which I don't believe is available on the 3500. There aren't too many 2500s floating around with 17" wheels, though. I'm not positive on the GM or Ford but I imagine the same can be said about the wheels/tires on those trucks as well.
