True that the real and original pasties are only made in the U.P. of Michigan as the Cornish Miners who came to this area to work in the vast underground copper mines back it the 1800's brought the recipe with them from Britain which has a climate and growing season similar to the U.P. Remember that they had to grow all their own food or raise the animals as there were no grocery store then. It had to be crops that could be stored and last underground below the winter freeze line every year and they knew just what to plant or they'd starve. Learned centuries before in Britain before they came here.
As for gravy on a pasty? We often do whereever including in the U.P. at pasty places as many offer it. Never been shot yet but have been looked down on a scolded by the locals but we just kept on chomping away on our pasty. Guess we're not good "Yoopers" but rather "Trolls" or "Pinkies" but we don't care. Just give us a good pasty and listen to the gnashing of teeth and gulping of liquid to wash it down to prepare the chamber for another load coming thru our lips and over the gums! Repeat, repeat, repeeat!
