Bedlam,
Depends on how you make a pasty as to how moist it will be inside. Never want it soupy inside as the crust would become soggy. Most people find a properly made pasty moist enough so they don't need a lot of beverage or none at all. Adding some rich brown mushroom onion gravy on top of a pasty adds even more flavor yet in our opinion. Catsup ruins a pasty in our opinion, however, we've seen some people pour catsup on their eggs, yuck! Also adding anything on top of a pasty makes the pasty purists near you cringe and want to choke you. That's tough bananas as we like Yoopers and the gorgeous area they live in, however, we're Trolls from the Lower Peninsula and just visiting their heaven a few times each year and helping their economy so they treat us very nice.
We like lots of beverages with our food regardless of what the weal is expect for soups or the like. Then we like a just a little less beverage. We both LOVE cold milk, both white and chocolate and drink lots (1 to 1-1/2 gallons each per week) of the wonderful stuff even though we're 71+ yrs old and have done it all our lives and not going to quit now. Me, regular whole milk and the wife 1% milk, both of us the 1% chocolate milk. We both also like real pop (some call it soda) not diet yuck and real 100% fruit juices. A can or two of very cold Michelob sits well with me every day or two and the wife likes a cooler or a weak large fruity mixed drink with vodka about every other day. Duh! I like'em too. Whoops, forgot about our one big cup of hot great fresh ground cherry coffee every morning and the 5-7 large glasses of ice cold water or with cubes in it we drink every day. Yup, you can bet we know where the potties are contsantly but we're well flushed out and healthy and very happy!
I had my first Pastie back in about 1956 in the UP of Michigan. There was a small restaurant/take out west on Hiway 2 out of st Ignace and they sold the best Pasties even up to now, they kind of advertized as a new meal back then from the miners. I didn't know what they were and tried them and have had many many since then, just love them even with dark gravy sometimes too. JMHO jb
