Maybe it's just me, but I tend to disregard references to data/surveys/studies/etc. that don't include a link; makes me think they are hiding something they don't want the rest of us to see (or it's just plain made up facts to begin with).
For instance, do they include a pop-up as a tent? What about Hybrids? etc. etc. etc.
I agree, links and references are good to support a claim, however I don't find it unbelievable. A lot of people camp in tents that you'll never see in a campground. Backwoods, epic hikes, beach camping, bike camping, backyard camping, scouts etc. I think about all the people that hike the Appalachian trail annually. Things like that.
Add the Pacific crest trail from Mexico to Canadian border. I reference a place I've spent the night before. On literally a 1000" of snow and ice at the 11000' mark of my Rainier. One can add the 100 mile Wonderland trail going around Rainier.
