Last fall I had a chainsaw and generator stolen from my campsite where I was staying with my oldest daughter, which is the first time that's ever happened to me in my 40 years. I was in a forest service campground during deer hunting season. I'm not going to wholesale change how I camp or overly worry about it, but I do run a chain through things now to keep them secured. I do agree that you're less likely to run into issues as you get away from other people, be it campgrounds or near seedy towns. Fact is most campers in dispersed areas are armed (myself included).
