To the OP:
You are correct that "stay or go" is part of a larger and growing societal problem. I suspect that many residents of the San Francisco area are grappling with this now (maybe Seattle too). As homeless populations grow, this type of crime is inevitable, and everyone has to find their personal breaking point.
As to your immediate problem, one of my approaches to security whether traveling or in my backyard is what I call "loss leaders". I leave shiny but mostly worthless objects for the miscreants to grab. They're usually in a hurry, so the most available is taken.
When boating, I leave old skis/ropes laying out, while the custom expensive stuff is in the below deck lockers. When camping, I leave an old worthless cooler with a few beers, and the old lantern. I also have some attractive but low-value items in the truck bed (an nice unused toolbox with old rusty stuff, along with other easy-to-grab items). I've rarely encountered crime in the parks, but all I've lost is a few worthless (to me) objects. The subhuman grabs something it thinks is valuable and runs. I go on unconcerned.
Just an idea...
