Well the Tahoe is the only TV I have ever pulled this trailer with so it is all I know. I have read posts referring to their towing experience as “rock solid” and I wouldn’t describe mine as such. I guess what I was really hoping for was a consensus of people saying something like “your situation sounds just about perfect for X”. Thank you for your opinions and I hope they keep coming. Every little but of information helps.
You'll get that consensus, and the consensus is anything from a 1/2 ton gas/diesel to a 1 ton diesel! Lol.
Short answer, any reasonably well equipped 1/2 ton pickup will pull as good or better than your Tahoe, which is basically a new reasonably well equipped 1/2 ton as it sits, but with a little less payload and sprung a little softer because its primary designation is more soccer mom than tow rig.
Since opinions are all you'll get and they're subjective, MY opinion is, well, it depends how long you keep your DD vehicles. If you're trading up every 2 years like you're considering, then buy whatever, the roi is bad anyway.
Fuel mileage being a big concern for your presumably highway miles commuting, a HD diesel will be a wash on fuel costs and ownership costs compared to an expensive SUV lime you have. BUT the newer 1/2 ton diesels are targeting you and your uses. Exceptional fuel mileage for the high windshield time and good towing capability for the weekend camping trips. And both big and little diesels don't really cost more than a nice full soze SUV.
