Can I improve my gas mileage?

I have a Bigfoot 2500 on a Chevy 2500HD with a big block gas engine. The truck only had about 60,000 miles and is stock. On a recent 900 mile round trip camping expedition, where we also flat towed our Jeep Wrangler, I tracked the gas mileage at about seven miles per gallon. I think we used to get 9 - 10 MPG. I would be interested in any thoughts or suggestions on improving gas mileage.

  • I would have the engine scopped. Big blocks used to eat timing chains pretty early in life.
  • With a 6.0 I also get on average 10.5. Sometimes more and sometime less depending on the wind.
  • Big block Chevy? The real answer would be to buy a diesel.

As long as it's all tuned up, 8-10 is normal. Was the 7mpg a lot more hills?
  • Leave the jeep at home. Too much weight not enough horses/torque. I have the same truck with the 6.0 engine and only get 10.5 mpg and that is on the flats and not towing.
