Can this Tundra Tow??

I'm looking at purchasing a 2017 5.7L V8 limited edition Tundra. Will this truck pull my rig that is 6880 dry?? Or im also looking at a 6.4L V8 RAM 2500??

I know the Ram is more truck but can the Tundra do the job?

As long as everything is going well, you will be fine with the Tundra. As soon as something bad happens, you will learn why most people prefer enough truck to have a safety margin. The Tundra has NO safety margin with that trailer.
  • If you are looking to purchase, and not trying to make an existing truck fit the situation, I'd go for a 3/4 ton gasser (Ram 6.4/2500 would be a fine choice).

Buy the right tool for the job that has some margin for safety. At best you are on the edge with the Tundra.

My previous TT was 6800 lbs loaded and that was about all I wanted to tow with my 1/2 ton. Your starting out higher than that.

  • The Tundra would work, but not the right truck for that size trailer. Any of the 3/4 tons would work better. The 3/4 ton gassers would not have more power than the Tundra, but more payload, stability, higher RAWR.

  • It will pull it but you may run out of payload. What is your trucks payload rating and what do you plan on carrying in it? We towed the truck in my sig for 2 years with a crewmax Tundra. 6400lbs dry, 7600lbs loaded. With a family of 4 on board we were on average about 400lbs over payload but under axle and tire ratings. Truck towed great, no problems pulling. Our next truck was a Ram 2500 5.7hemi. I thought it would be a big difference but the Tundra with its 4.30 rear gear and strong transmission pulled better. The 6.4hemi should have no problem with that trailer and have plenty of payload but I still read the common complaints about the transmission gear spacing. The 5.7 had the same transmission issue and so many problems that drove me crazy to the point I got rid of the truck.
  • Your TT will probably be about 8000 lb loaded for camping, with 1000-1200 lb of tongue weight. Subtract that from the payload capacity of the truck--found on the sticker inside the door--to find out how much will remain for passengers, gear, etc.
