Can we talk toilet paper?

Just got back from a wonderful trip in Michigan's upper Peninsula and I have question for my fellow TC'ers. We have been using commercial RV toilet paper in our TC but I hate that stuff. It's so thin and flimsy the only safe way to take care of business is to use a fairly large quantity to avoid problems. We have a septic tank at home and we are very careful about what goes in the septic. Do we really need to use RV toilet paper in our TC or could we use the more substantial residential paper or will we have problems in our blackwater tank or using the dump station that I am not aware of? What do you folks use? Any recommendations?

No, you do not need to use that flimsy over-priced TP.

I have been using the same stuff in my RV that I use at home.
  • We use the thick stuff don't even care if septic safe both in the TC and at home. We are on septic at the house and never had a problem in the 10 years we have owned the house. Go through at least 1 roll per day with the fam in the TC!!! Have found your best friend is the aqua-chem that breaks the toilet paper down into a black water smoothie. Without the chemical when dumping you will see paper size boulders when dumping a :0! Doesn't seem to be a problem just need to do A second or third flush if necessary :)
  • Use septic safe paper always. Any brand and Happy Camper. In fact I put Happy Camper in the gray tanks as well. No smell from the gray tanks. If you ever had to change a gray water valve, you would know it can smell much worse the the black water. It lubericates the valve seals. The paper is broken down very fast in the black tank with Happy Camper. Unlike with the liquid stuff I used before using the "proper" RV toilet paper that is suppose to break down fast. Nothing like dumping your black water tank and see it trickle, turn on the black tank sprayer, and then pray the clog will be pushed out before something bad happens.
  • Just send an extra bowl full of water down with each flush. Lots of water in the blacktank is your friend!
  • Thanks for the information. We have been using a septic safe paper at home and will start using that in the TC.
  • look for "septic safe" on your packages of TP. Or, take a square, put it in a glass or bowl of water and leave it awhile. if it melts down, it's good enough for your tank. :)
  • Life is too short to use cheap terlit paper.

The only good uses for RV paper is starting a camp fire or sanding drywall.

We use Charmin Ultra Plus. We're old. We've paid our dues. Time for a little comfort in life.
  • We don't have a TC, but in our TT we use the same septic safe TP we use at home and purchase in bulk at Samsclub. We have a straight drop from toilet to black tank in our rig, we use plenty of water with each flush making it easy for most of the contents to flow out when dumping. We have purchased RV toilet paper in the past and also find you need to use an inordinate amount to get the job done.
  • Don't waste your money on RV Toilet paper. I use anything that is Septic Safe.
    Never had a problem.
  • Been discussed a LOT. From what I have derived is Single ply Scott 1000. There are a lot of opinions and most agree the RV stuff is not required. JMHO
