Discussions, and in some cases arguments, about weight ratings are so widespread in RV forums of all persuasions posting in one is almost like a "right of passage".
Folks who choose to disregard the manufacturers' ratings are essentially responding to the lack of "face validity" in the ratings meaning that on the face of things they make no sense. And all of the alternative rationales may be spot on, or miss the mark. No one really knows for sure, so you end up with lots of differing opinions.
It's really not any different than choosing which rules to follow in other things in life. I adhere to the weight ratings. Maybe if I had a reason not too, I might choose to ignore them also. I don't know. I think people are more likely to follow a rule when they believe it makes sense and a lot of folks are saying (my interpretation) "these rules about weight restrictions on our trucks don't seem to make any sense". :)
